Blood Ransom by Lisa Harris

Book Description:  Natalie Sinclair is working to eradicate the diseases decimating whole villages in the Republic of Dhambizao when she meets Dr. Chad Talcott, a surgeon on sabbatical from a lucrative medical practice now volunteering at a small clinic. Meanwhile, things are unraveling in Dhambizao. Joseph Komboli returns to his village to discover rebel soldiers abducting his family and friends. Those that were too old or weak to work lay motionless in the African soil. When Chad and Natalie decide to help Joseph expose this modern-day slave trade---and a high-ranking political figure involved in it---disaster nips at their heels. Where is God in the chaos? Will Chad, Natalie, and Joseph win their race against time? Romance and adventure drive Blood Ransom, by Lisa Harris, a powerful thriller about the modern-day slave trade and those who dare to challenge it.

My Review:  I wasn't too thrilled to read this book simply because the cover didn't appeal to me.  I know . . . never judge a book by its cover!  I should know that by now but sometimes a cover does "grab" me and I just have to read the book!
The story begins with a young, African teen, Joseph, headed back to his isolated and primitive village.  He has with him a digital camera, some candy and a bag of sugar for his mother. He is anxious to return to his village and see his family especially his younger sister.  However, just as Joseph is about to step out of the forest he hears screams, not joyful laughter and playing of the children.  He hesitates!  And this is what probably saves his life.
As Joseph is struggling with the shock and surprise of what he sees . . . to his horror he sees the "ghost" soldiers!  Ghost soldiers are thought to not really exist for no one has ever had proof of their existence.  No, they are not invisible spirits but true, African soldiers who steal whole villages at a time to work as slave labor!
Joseph then remembers the digital camera his uncle gave him and begins snapping pictures of the soldiers as proof.  Not paying attention to where he is going...a twig snaps and one of the soldiers turns to see Joseph.  He chases Joseph but Joseph manages to escape.  Joseph then returns to the city to find Natalie.
This is where the story really begins.  Natalie listens to Joseph and believes him!  But will anyone else believe since Joseph lost his camera...the proof?!?!  Natalie convinces Dr. Chad that Joseph is not lying.  Off the three go to retrieve Joseph's camera.  No easy feat!
Ah!  This is one.of.those.heart.beating reads!  I was immensely intrigued by the story and felt such empathy for Joseph who wants to save his family. Loved Natalie and Dr. Chad but wasn't too fond of Natalie's boyfriend!
If you enjoy Christian suspense with today's headline then this is the read for you!
A read worthy of 5 stars!
Anxiously waiting to read Blood Covenant!
